Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria are botanical gardens spread across two locations-Melbourne and Cranbourne. Melbourne Gardens was founded in 1846 after the land was set aside on the south shore of the Yarra River for a brand new botanical garden. It covers 38 hectares of land that slopes down to the river, with gardens, trees, and lakes, as well as lawns. It has 50,000 plants that represent more than 8,500 species. They are displayed in 30 live plant collections. Cranbourne Gardens was established in 1970 when the land was purchased by the Gardens located on Melbourne's south-eastern fringe to create a garden dedicated exclusively to Australian plants. It is a generally wild area that is vital for the conservation of biodiversity. It was opened to the public in 1989. The site covers 363 acres visitors can discover the native bushland, heathlands, woodlands, and wetlands. One of the main attractions at Cranbourne is the Australian Garden which celebrates Australian landscapes and flora with the display of more than 170,000 plants, including 1,700 varieties of plants.
